Since 1979, the U.S. Coast Guard has worked cooperatively with the Canadian Coast Guard in managing vessel traffic in adjacent waters. The establishment and operation of Vessel Traffic Service Puget Sound (VTSPS) or “Seattle Traffic” under the authority of the Ports and Waterways Safety Act, is a major effort by the U. S. Coast Guard to ensure the continued safe use of these waters for its many diverse users.
